A guide to tech icons

Tech icons for software, systems and devices

Tech icons make digital products and technical explanations easier to scan. A chip can identify computing hardware, a cloud can introduce hosted services, and a code symbol can point to development resources. Use technology icons in software dashboards, architecture diagrams, documentation and product presentations. Start with the level of detail your audience needs. A business overview may benefit from a simple server symbol, while a technical diagram may need separate graphics for storage, networking and applications. A recognizable symbol should shorten the explanation, not replace essential information about how a system works or what a control will do.

Find code, cloud, hardware and network symbols

Try code, cloud, server, database, laptop, chip, network or terminal to explore different areas of technology. Device icons can distinguish desktop and mobile experiences; database and server symbols help describe where information is stored or processed. For an integration feature, search for the actual action as well as the object: connect, sync or upload may give more useful options than a broad technology term. Brand marks can have separate trademark considerations, so a generic device or code icon is often preferable when you are describing a capability rather than a particular vendor. Compare meaning before choosing visual complexity.

Keep technical diagrams and interfaces coherent

Choose a consistent family for related technology icons so a diagram does not mix unrelated drawing conventions. Match perspective, corner style and stroke weight across servers, devices and network components. Use connectors and labels to explain relationships rather than expecting the icon to show every detail. In interfaces, reserve strong color for states or actions that need attention, and make sure small code brackets or chip details remain visible. Check light and dark surfaces before export. If a symbol is unfamiliar to a general audience, a short label such as “Storage” or “Developer tools” will usually be more helpful than additional ornament.

Find, customize and download

Best Icons brings 272,978 icons from 151 collections into one searchable library. The search system uses names, descriptions and related terms to help you explore possible matches. This page keeps its topic selected while you narrow the results. Switch between Line, Solid, Color and Duotone, or open Advanced Settings to choose a collection and refine the selection.

Choose the right file for your project

Use SVG for scalable interface artwork and editable vectors, or PNG when your publishing tool needs a raster image. The color controls let you try a brand color; Color icons retain their original palette until you choose a custom tint. Check the source license shown for each icon and your account’s download access before using an asset. A topic label describes visual meaning, not a certification or permission. For a coherent result, pair icons with clear text labels and check their contrast at the size people will actually see.
